The Quran and Ahadith on Alcohol and Intoxicants

Qur'aan :

Allaah Ta’ala says (which means): O you who believe! Intoxicants, gambling, Al Ansaab, and Al Azlaam (arrows for seeking luck or decision) are an abomination of Satan's handiwork. So avoid (strictly all) that (abomination) in order that you may be successful. Satan only wants to cause between you animosity and hatred through intoxicants and gambling and to avert you from the remembrance of Allaah and from prayer. So will you not desist? [Qur'an 5:90].

[*Al-Ansaab were stone-altars at fixed places or graves, whereon sacrifices were slaughtered on certain occasions in the name of idols, jinn, angels, pious men, saints in order to honour them or to expect some benefit from them].

The above two-verses are an evidence that all kinds of intoxicants are prohibited by many ways, among which the scholars have mentioned the following:

1) It was compared to idol worship.

2) Allaah called intoxicants an abomination.

3) Allaah described intoxicants to be among the devil's handy work.

4) Allaah ordered us to desist from intoxicants.

5) Allaah mentioned the harm that intoxicants cause, like enmity, hatred, and they prevent a person from mentioning Allaah.

 Ahaadith

The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) said:

“ Wine is cursed from ten angles: The wine itself, the one who squeezes (the grapes etc), the one for whom it is squeezed, the one who sells it, the one who buys it, the one who carries it, the one to whom it is carried, the one who consumes its price, the one who drinks it and the one who pours it.” Sunan Ibn Majah 3380

The Messenger (ﷺ) said: Allah has cursed wine, its drinker, its server, its seller, its buyer, its presser, the one for whom it is pressed, the one who conveys it, and the one to whom it is conveyed . Sunan Abi Dawud 3674

The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, said, “ When my nation adopts five practices, their destruction is inevitable: when they curse each other openly, they wear silk, they take up musical instruments, they drink wine, and men are satisfied with men and women are satisfied with women.” Shu’ab al-Imān 5084

The Messenger, peace and blessings be upon him, said, “ Avoid all intoxicants.” Sunan Ibn Mājah 3405

Abu Darda reported: My dear friend the Messenger, peace and blessings be upon him, instructed me, “ Do not associate anything with Allah, even if you are slashed and burned. Do not leave the obligatory prayers on purpose, for whoever leaves them on purpose has forfeited the protection of Allah. Do not drink wine, for it is the key to every evil.” Sunan Ibn Mājah 4034

The Messenger, peace and blessings be upon him, said, “ The adulterer is not a believer while he commits adultery. The thief is not a believer while he is stealing. The drinker of wine is not a believer while he is drinking, yet repentance is possible thereafter.” Ṣaḥīḥ al-Bukhārī 6810, Ṣaḥīḥ Muslim 57

Imām al-Nawawī (may Allah have mercy on him) explained this hadith by saying that the correct understanding, as held by the scholars, is that a person does not commit these sins while having complete and perfect faith. The meaning is not that faith is totally absent, but that its perfection is negated.

This is a common style of expression in Arabic, where something is denied to emphasize that it lacks its true or complete form. Similar examples include saying, “There is no knowledge except beneficial knowledge,” “There is no wealth except camels,” and “There is no life except the life of the Hereafter.”

When the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, liberated Mecca, he said, “ Verily, Allah Almighty and His Messenger have forbidden wine and its sale for you, and have forbidden carrion and its sale for you, and have forbidden you from eating the flesh of swine or selling it. Trim your mustaches, let your beards grow, and do not walk in the markets unless you are properly clothed. Verily, he is not one of us who acts upon another way from ours.” al-Mu’jam al-Kabīr lil-Ṭabarānī 11335

The Messenger, peace and blessings be upon him, said, “ Whoever has faith in Allah and the Last Day, let him not sit at a table over which wine is being served.” Sunan al-Tirmidhī 2801

Abdullah ibn Umar reported: The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, said, “ Whoever drinks wine, Allah will not accept his prayer for forty mornings, but if he repents, Allah will accept his repentance. If he does it again, Allah will not accept his prayer for forty mornings, but if he repents, Allah will accept his repentance. If he does it again, Allah will not accept his prayer for forty mornings, but if he repents, Allah will accept his repentance. If he does it again a fourth time, Allah will not accept his prayer for forty mornings and if he repents, Allah will not accept his repentance. He will drink from a river of pus in Hell.” Sunan al-Tirmidhī 1862

Al-Tibi said, “His saying if he repents that Allah will not accept his repentance, it is interpreted as his doing so stubbornly or at the time of his death. The unacceptability of repentance is necessitated at the time of death upon unbelief or sinful disobedience.”Mirqāt al-Mafātīḥ 6/2386

Note: Prayer during this time is still compulsory, but there will be no reward in it.

Al-Harith reported: Uthman, may Allah be pleased with him, said, “ Stay away from wine, for it is the mother of wickedness. By Allah, faith and addiction to wine cannot be combined but that one of them will eventually expel the other.” Sunan al-Nasā’ī 5666

Abu Musa reported: The Messenger, peace and blessings be upon him, sent myself and Mu’adh ibn Jabal to Yemen. I said, “O Messenger of Allah, there is a wine in our land prepared from barley known as beer and another wine prepared from honey known as mead.” The Messenger said, “ Every intoxicant is unlawful.” Sahih Muslim 1733

The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) said:“ Every intoxicant is unlawful and whatever causes intoxication in large amounts, a small amount of it is (also) unlawful.” Sunan Ibn Majah 3392

Action Plan:

🔹️If you have never consumed alcohol, these verses serve as a strong warning to stay away from it.

🔹️If you do drink, then ask Allah Ta‘ala for forgiveness and give it up immediately.

The Messenger, peace and blessings be upon him, said, “ Verily, you will never leave anything for the sake of Allah Almighty but that Allah will replace it with something better for you .”Musnad Aḥmad 23074

🔹️If you are struggling with addiction, turn to Allah Ta‘ala and ask Him to make it easy for you to give it up, for only He can make difficult things easy. Continue striving to quit, and if you slip, do not give up—rather, try again and again. Reflect on what triggers your addiction, such as your friends, environment, work, or other influences, and do your best to change them. Keep asking Allah for help, and never lose hope in His mercy.

“ Say, ‘O My servants who have transgressed against themselves [by sinning], do not despair of the mercy of Allah. Indeed, Allah forgives all sins. Indeed, it is He who is the Forgiving, the Merciful .’ ” (Surah Az-Zumar, Ayah 53)”

The Prophet (Sallallaahu Alaihi Wasallam) said, “ Allah the Almighty said: ,“O son of Adam, so long as you call upon Me and ask from Me, I shall pardon you for what you have done, and I wouldn’t care. O son of Adam, were your sins to reach the clouds of the sky and were you then to ask forgiveness of Me, I would forgive you. O son of Adam, were you to come to Me with sins nearly as great as the earth and were you then to face Me, ascribing no partner to Me, I would bring you forgiveness almost as great as it.’ ” (Tirmidhi)”
